Cómo inició nuestro Museo

Artesanías "Quinto Sol" fue el nombre que enlazó los comienzos organizativos del Museo en 1985. Los esfuerzos del fundador, Jesus Cantú Medel fueron asistidos por Marcos Mena, Ildefonso "Poncho" Ruiz y Joe Andrade. Museo Guadalupe Aztlan inicio oficialmente en marzo 2004 con el fin de promover artes folkloricas indígenas de la Americas, incluyiendo el pueblo chicano-latino. Historicamente, nuestro Museo ha sido una extension del Movimiento Cultural Chicano, el cual empiezo en los 1960's. La meta principal del Movimiento fue rescatar y promover el personaje mestizo de la identidad chicana. Hasta la fecha, la meta del Museo ha sido crear concencia cultural a la poblacion chicana-latina en la ciudad de Houston, Texas; la base de nuestras actividades y presentaciones sigue siendo el nuevo indigenismo. Además, nuestro Museo ha formado el primer festival de cine chicano-latino, "Cine Cuauhtemoc Pan American Film Festival". Dicho festival comenzó en 1999 y se presenta año con año, siendo una muestra que busca reunir las producciones recientes de cineastas con temas chicanos e indigenas, este festival se desarrolla con el apoyo de la Universidad de Houston-Downtown.

MUSEO GUADALUPE AZTLAN (HOUSTON) TAKES CORRIDOS TOUR TO GALLISTA GALLERY,
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.

Who: Museo Guadalupe Aztlan is a museum founded in 1994 with the mission to promote indigenous folk art of the Americas, to include the Chicano(a)-Latino(a) community. The museum’s artists-in-residence to perform include Ildelfonso “Poncho” Martinez (bajo sexto). Another group under the label Los Pistoleros de Tejas will be represented by Roberto Rodriguez (accordion) and Leonel Rios (bajo sexto).

What: Newly-recorded corridos to tour include Chicano(a) icons such as Lydia Mendoza (singer); Gregorio Cortez (folk hero); Dolores Huerta (Co-founder of United Farmworkers’ Union; Reis Lopez Tijerina (land-rights activist); Rodolofo “Corky” Gonzalez (poet); and others, will be sung.

Where: Live music performance will take place at Gallista Gallery, 1913 So. Flores, San Antonio, TX 78223 (210.212.8606) from 7:00pm-10:00pm.

When/Time: Friday, February 19, 2010, 7:00pm -10:00pm. Admission is $10/single; $15 couple. DVD sales of corridos and cash bar; door prizes to be given.

A Performance Piece Written by

Sylvia Armendáriz Hernández

SYNOPSIS

This performance piece is a work-in-progress originally written for performance by myself for fellow classmates in a Mexican American Culture class taught by Dr. Grisel Cano at the University of Houston. It is based on a true incident that occurred in Southern Texas during the Civil War. Josefa “Chipita” Rodriguez was arrested, tried and executed for the murder of John Savage, a horse trader to the Confederate Army. She never confessed to it, a murder weapon was not found, motive could not be determined and there were no witnesses. She was found guilty based solely on circumstantial evidence and hanged in San Patricio, Texas on November 13, 1863. She is considered by some to be the first woman legally executed by the fairly new State of Texas. The only words that she supposedly spoke on her behalf during the legal process were “no culpable” (not guilty). At her sentencing, the jury found her guilty of murder but recommended clemency based on her age. The judge, a former Confederate office, sentenced her to hang. He handed down a much lighter sentence on her supposed co-hort, Juan Selvera – five years at hard labor in Huntsville.

The concept I developed for this piece was that because she never spoke on her behalf, her story would be told by the people she had some type of interaction with. All of the characters are based on real people.

From the time I first heard about her and began to do research on her, I have strongly felt her story should be told. My original goal was to do a documentary. Perhaps the day will come when this can be accomplished. I have done about as much research as is available in English over the years. I would like to focus my research on Spanish language publications from that time period as well as interview elderly Mexican American people from the particular part of Texas where this occurred in the hopes that they will have heard about it from their grandparents or grandparents who may have witnessed the unfolding of these events.

Chipita’s story is well known in the area around Corpus Christi. The tree from which she was hanged is supposedly still standing in San Patricio, Texas. Whatever the reason, the most intriguing aspect is that her spirit is supposed to walk along the Nueces River. My question is “why” was she hanged? Was it to keep Mexicans in their place? Was it to teach a lesson to her fellow citizens that if they crossed the Confederate Army, punishment would be harsh and swift? Or was it a combination of both? In the mid-twentieth century, she was exonerated by a proclamation from the Texas State Legislature. My piece can’t answer those questions. Perhaps no one can today. But I can try to be a voice on her behalf and be a reminder that our past is not so sterile.

Nuestro Taller de lectura dará inicio el sábado 7 de febrero e iniciaremos con la lectura de "Cien años de Soledad" de Gabriel García Márquez.

Cien años de soledad es sin dudas un clásico ya consagrado de la literatura Latinoamérica. Su autor Gabriel García Márquez reafirma su fama y prestigio con cada nueva publicación. Pero este libro deja en el lector un recuerdo imborrable compuesto de pasiones y situaciones mágicas e irónicas. Narrado en tercera persona no ofrece juicios de valor acerca de los hechos que transcurren ni establece puntos que demarquen y distingan la realidad de lo mágico.

La novela se desarrolla durante principios del siglo veinte, en época del imperialismo colonial, un hecho delatador es la llegada de los americanos a Macondo. La guerra entre liberales y conservadores también encaja con esta época. Otro hecho a tener en cuenta es que el autor nació en 1928 y algunos de los aspectos escritos en la novela encajan con aspectos vividos por él.

En este libro se describe la historia, tragedias y buenaventuras de la familia Buendía a lo largo de seis generaciones. La unión que da comienzo a la trama comienza bailando sobre las leyes del incesto. José Arcadio y Ursula fundaran con otras tantas familias el mítico Macondo, escenario donde transcurrirán precisamente cien años de soledad.
